Here at GEMSI, we are really happy to see the creative play coming out of Cairo. For instance, the beautiful lamp below was created in a competition co-sponsored by GEMSI and run by Mahmoud, a GEMSI member, out of FabLab Egypt and Giza Hackerspace.

1st place: Rana Bahaa for the Prametric Fanoos (above)

The idea of the competition was to reconnect Egypt with its manufacturing roots in a creative way which would include the possibilities afforded by new rapid prototyping tools. Local manufacturing for the modern age. In Egypt hanging the fanoos lantern is a popular tradition during Ramadan. In recent years more and more have been imported and the traditional fabricators are aging with no one to replace them. The work submitted to this competition are all projects to be proud of and I think it’s clear that Egypt is a part of the global maker movement. Creating value through the people centric, small scale, rapid prototyping “third industrial revolution”? Heck yes!
